Why Your Business Should Be on Twitter: Part 1

You might hear people say that “Twitter is dying” and you shouldn’t waste your time building and maintaining a presence on it. I would beg to differ. Twitter is still one of the most influential social media platforms out there, thanks to its unique characteristics and features. Here are some reasons why your company should still be on Twitter.

Large Audience

To start, did you know that Twitter still has 317 million active users or that the number of active users is continuing to grow?  Since 2012, Twitter has seen an increasing number of monthly active users and the adoption rate increased by 1.5% from 2015 to 2016.

Additionally, 24% percent of all internet users are on Twitter and 500 million people visit the site without logging in. Think of the huge potential audience you’re ignoring if you’re not on Twitter.

Different Demographic

Unlike most other social media platforms, Twitter has more male users than female users. You’ll also reach a more “mature” audience on Twitter. Of the users on Twitter, 40.4% are 18-34 years old, 36.7% are 35-54 years old and 22.9% are over 55 years old. It’s also worth mentioning that 54% of Twitter users earn more than $50,000 a year. This means that, overall, Twitter users have a higher economic standing and a greater potential of consuming. Still think it’s okay to not be on Twitter?

Discover and Interact

92% of companies are tweeting more than once a day. Basically, you can bet your competitors are already on Twitter. 66% of users use Twitter as a way to discover new, small or medium size businesses (SMBs) and 70% of SMB followers will retweet content.

In fact, according to Twitter, 94% of users plan to purchase from the SMB they follow and 69% purchased from an SMB because they saw tweets regarding their products. Additionally, 81% of users say Twitter impacts their purchasing decisions more than TV. That’s great for us since a Twitter campaign usually costs much less than placing ads on TV.

Global Market

One other thing important to know about Twitter is that 79% of accounts are based outside the United States. Brazil, Japan, and Mexico are the countries with the most users, with 80 million users between them. In addition, Twitter is the second most popular social media platform in Central America with 54% of people using it. If you are at all interested in reaching an audience outside of the US, Twitter should be your #1 friend.

Twitter is unique and irreplaceable in today’s social media landscape, so there really is no reason to not include it in your social media strategy. Additionally, Twitter is undergoing several exciting changes! We will cover those in our next post, so be sure to read that too!
