Recommended for You: How Netflix Uses Data to Keep You on Your Couch

Netflix has over 50 million members, myself included. And they know a lot about us. No, they don’t know that I had a delicious chicken parm for lunch today, or that I’m technically on a Paleo diet but I can’t muster the strength to deny myself a hot, saucy sandwich from time to time. But they do know that I’ve been watching old episodes of 30 Rock after work. And that I watched the entire first season of Orange is the New Black over the course of two days (I think it was raining that weekend?).

What I’m trying to say is, Netflix has a lot of data. Not only are they tracking what we’re watching, but also when and where we’re watching, whether we’re watching full episodes or pausing and coming back to them. They track all these things because they know how valuable data is. How, if used well, data can improve their product, their customer experience, and of course, their bottom line. The 2 Enlightening Twitter Metrics We Often Ignore

Week after week, we read the latest social media news and best practices articles hoping to make sense of the numbers on the screen. Social media measurement is important to us as social media managers and small business owners – both for job security and plain old sanity. We need to be able to prove to our bosses, coworkers and even ourselves that all the time we invest posting is actually worth the effort and battery power. (We all know the struggle of being tethered to an outlet for the sake of live tweets.)

So here is some light at the end of the tunnel, the quick guide on how to analyze your Twitter stats and convert some of those numbers into impactful action. Continue reading “The 2 Enlightening Twitter Metrics We Often Ignore”

The Universe of Performance Dashboards: Let Us Do the Juggling

Is juggling a skill or a pastime? For freelancers, SMEs, and boutique online sellers, it often ends up being more the former than the latter. Why is that? Because most of us are the CEO, CFO, COO, and the guy that cleans the washroom – all rolled up into one. Most of us won’t end up having a boardroom behind us – it will likely end up being a handful of staff (at best), a supportive network, friends, and probably your kids fixing the tech problems. And that’s just fine.

However, where can we get help to keep all the balls in the air? That’s why new, multi-platform maps offer incredible value to today’s independent entrepreneurs. We may not be able to afford staff, let alone high-priced researchers, but we can set aside enough to get the support we need to gain insights, gather trends, and get more out of what we put into our online strategy.

Whether you call them dashboards, multi-channel maps, or just a bird’s-eye-view to your operations, there are many ways you can streamline your operations through using a multi-platform data aggregator providing insights, trends, and a more comprehensive understanding of your business flow. So what’s out there? Continue reading “The Universe of Performance Dashboards: Let Us Do the Juggling”

Learning on the Go with the Latest Generations of Apps

Education has reached the mobile device, and in a big way. Learning on the go has begun to establish itself in a world where everyone is busy and no one has time to do anything.

“We believe smartphones bring education to people’s hands and pockets instead of requiring them to find a specific time and place to learn,” says Gina Gotthilf, head of communications for mobile language-learning app Duolingo. “Now, people who are too busy to dedicate long periods of time to take a class regularly, or who can’t afford it, can learn by dedicating short spurts of time when it is most convenient to them.”

According to Gotthilf, over 72 million users spend time learning languages on Duolingo through mobile devices—a number that represents 85% of the program’s traffic. Continue reading “Learning on the Go with the Latest Generations of Apps”
